Imagine a mobile game where you´re washed up on a mysterious island and your quest is to find out why you ended up there and what mysterious monsters you have to fight to gain leverage in the game.
No, it is not a mobile game for a certain popular TV series that recently ended, but rather a 2D side-scrolling RPG game by Terato Tech Sdn Bhd, called Qalvinius, which is also the name of the mysterious island that your character ends up on after a storm crashes your boat.
Terato Tech´s head of software development, Calvin Tan, said that they wanted to make a game with a lot of interaction and not just one where you slash and hack at monsters.
"The game offers interactivity. Players don´t feel like they are playing a game but can explore what´s inside," he said.
And it is quite an interactive game, with two towns and eight maps for you to navigate. Players will be able to roam around towns and lands to meet merchants and characters that will provide more details about the monster around the island.
The story line describes what happens on the island and is episodic. The more you play, the more you will know.
You start of as a Blader and there are three other characters in the game -- Warrior, Wizard and Archer. As you move along in the story, you will be able to use these other characters, but you must first meet on your journey.
Qalvinius is an exploration game, where you will meet and help the people on the island, and along the way try to understand what is happening on the island.
The island also has its fair share of monsters, which you must fight to gain items and more power. After the monster is defeated, it will leave behind items for you to pick-up and use, such as magic potions to defeat the monsters, gold, silver and bronze to buy other items (including more magic potions) or other items needed for your quest.
Fighting monsters will also allow your character to gain better skills, which will become useful in fighting monsters, especially the more advanced monsters in the later stages of the game.
It also allows your character to "level up" and gain stat points that you can use increase your character´s strength, intelligence and dexterity.
The screen gives you easy access to your inventory, your quest summary and objective and your character´s vital stats.
Terato Tech has even included extra mini-games within the game itself for extra entertainment and a way to gain virtual prizes.
There is also a community feature that allows players to leave messages and interact with each other. In the future, players will be able to post to Facebook or Twitter feeds as well.
And just how long will it take for you to complete the game? For Tan, it took him 16 hours, but he had the advantage of knowing the story line.
The game is currently available from the Apple App store for free until 2 August 2010. The regular price is at $0.99.
Tan also said that in the works is a HD version of the game for the Apple iPad.
