Western Digital (WD) recently launched its new WD VelociRaptor hard disk drive drive (HDD) range, targeting creative professionals who demand the ultimate SATA drive: speed, performance, and reliability.
Both vendor and customer believe that such a speedy and powerful storage platform is the sure-fire solution to all the hassles the creative industry face when in the process of rendering videos, producing creative designs, and managing large dynamic files.
"With the ever-increasing demand for greater capacity, the launch of the new WD VelociRaptor drive series is timely as it is designed to deliver the ultimate combination of speed and storage for power uses," said Margaret Koh, Sales Director, Asia South, WD.
Optimised for high-performance PCs and Macs, the VelociRaptor has the following capacities: 1TB (RM1,099), 500GB (RM699) and 250 GB (RM549). All three are bundled together with a five year warranty plan.
According to WD, the VelociRaptor banks on reliable and speed factors as it is specifically targeted towards creative professionals who need hardware that will help to reduce waiting time in completing their work-related tasks.
"With the VelociRaptor, you can transfer a one minute video at an even faster transfer rate. This is because
the drive is equipped with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface and has been further optimised with a 64MB cache with a processing read/write speed of 10,000RPM," added Patrick Lo, APAC Enterprise and CE Business Unit, Senior
Regional Marketing Manager, WD.
Having a high speed, high performance design, WD knew that the VelociRaptor would be running really hot. To keep it cool, the HDD comes bundled with an IcePack, a backplane-ready 3.5-inch enterprise-class mounting frame that has a built-in heat sink.
In addition to keeping it cool, WD has also included its Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) into the VelociRaptor´s design to optimise its operation and performance when it is used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis. This is to ensure the HDD will run at its peak even when it is operating in stressful environments.
With a theoretical high performance rating, large memory buffer, and support enhancements that would ensure a smooth operation, the VelociRaptor is certainly built to do more than just offer a long-lasting storage life. If WD can tackle the heating issue, increase the cache size, and lower the overall retail cost, it would definitely receive instantaneous take-up from all quarters and not just those from the creative side. It´s just a matter of time now or to consider competing technologies that will eventually offer similar storage capacities.
